The CTC-A was founded by the RWTH Aachen Faculty of Medicine as a operative service institution to support patient-oriented research.

The institution was charged with the coordination of clinical studies at Aachen University Hospital and the development of IT structures for excellent quality in clinical studies. The CTC-A works as the central umbrella organization for directing and integrating industiral and self-initiated clinical research. The CTC-A's support for the researching institutions is individual and need-based.

The center's main responsibilities are to formally and administratively support the researchers with funding proposals and planning, conducting, and evaluating clinical studies, as well as full cost calculations and reviewing and negotiating contracts. Professional support is ensured through efficient integrated management.

The CTC-A represents RWTH for self-initiated clinical research that is regulated by the Drugs and Medical Devices Act, and assumes sponsorship for clinical studies in accordance with 4 AMG and 3 MPG and thus the legal responsibility for ensuring patient safety and collecting valuable, qualitative data.
