Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass
The "Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass" (TMFB) Cluster of Excellence takes an interdisciplinary approach to research on new synthetic fuels derived from biomass. The goal is to determine the optimal combination of fuel components that are based on renewable raw materials, their production processes and new combustion processes.
The conversion of bio-material into tailor-made fuels and the definition of optimal fuel properties at both the macroscopic and molecular level present a great challenge to chemo and bio catalysis, process technology, combustion research and engine development. The interdisciplinary nature of this approach is the key to a holistic and sustainable solution for future vehicular traffic.
It is with great pleasure that the participants of the Cluster of Excellence “Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass” acknowledge the decision of the Council of Science and Humanities to fund their cluster for five more years as part of the Excellence Initiative. The cluster had applied for a funding budget of 40 million Euros. “This decision affirms our research achievements of the last five years. By promoting this Cluster of Excellence, the German Research Foundation offered all institutes involved the opportunity to conduct scientific work that otherwise would not have been possible”, declared Prof. Ernst Schmachtenberg, Rector of RWTH Aachen University.
Regarding the future, he goes on: “Even though fundamental research objectives have been achieved within the last five years, there is still a lot of work remaining for the team of the Cluster of Excellence ‘Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass’. Therefore, the council’s decision is a great incentive for all of the cluster’s members to continue their successful work in order to make the greatest possible contribution to a sustainable mobility of the future”, says Schmachtenberg.
